Calydos: What's it all about?

Owners of a digital camera experience a rapid growth of the number of image-files on their computers. From a certain point on it becomes more and more difficult to find an image from some time ago. You can browse through your hard disk, but in many cases the images have file names from which you can guess nothing. So by simply looking at your hard disk you cannot tell what content is in a file or - worse - you have no chance at all to find a certain image where the only thing you know is - e.g. - that there is your dog playing around with your little daughter, when she was three years old, which is quite some years ago.

So the answer is as clear as the lens from a Leica-camera:
You need an Image Database!

Calydos - Features:

Calydos is the first 'non-destructive' image database for OS/2 and eCS. That means, your images are 'stored' in the database without being modified or touched in any way themselves. To be exact, being 'stored' means: only references to the image-file are stored in the database.

Furthermore, that means that you must not rename or move an image file to another directory once it has been processed by Calydos ('stored' in the database), except by means of Cayldos' built-in features.

The screen shot on the right is a sample of how an image is given 'criteria' (properties) and being stored into the database (in order to see the full size of the screen-shot use the 'view image'-function of your browser).

In addition you can see the context-menu over the preview-image. Speaking of context-menus: The secret of 'How-To-Use' the Calydos-program is hidden in lots of context-menus, so the (almost) only thing to know is using your right mouse button over any of the GUI-objects.

More Features:

The program has one GUI but two modes: The Insert-mode for getting the images into the database and the Query-mode for finding, listing and exporting images.

Calydos is not able to edit an image-file in any way, however you can invoke your own favourite image-editor / -viewer-program directly from the Calydos-GUI.

Calydos cannot edit, but display an image in what we call a 'Preview-Window', which has a (configurable) maximum x,y-size and is scalable.

Galery-Feature: You can collect any number of images from the database into a 'Galery', which is a rectangle of thumbnails with ability of direct invocation of your favourite image-editor. A galery is configurable in some aspects, it can be given a name and be saved.
Saved galeries can be uploaded to a web-server (your own private or the public Calydos Galery Server).

Display of Exif-data (if present). For known camera-types the focal length is converted to the 35mm-equivalent. Known camera-types are stored in the file 'cams.txt', which may be extended by th user.

Calydos uses a special 'File-Browser' in order to navigate through the drives of your computer and to identify image-files. You can specify a filter to restrict the view of the File-Browser to certain file-types (such as jpg, tiff, raw etc.). Furthermore you can define single drives / directories as 'Image Domains'.
The items shown by the File-Browser are drives, directories and image-files. Each of these types possess their own special context-menu.

Limits:

Max. number of images stored in the database:	1 million
Max. number of images in a Galery:	999
Max. length of an image-title:	100 ¹
Max. length of an image's filename:	50 ¹
Max. length of an image's filepath:	100 ¹
Max. length of an image's 'content'-data:	250 ¹

All of the above maximum database-field-lengths may be modified by means of a dbase-utility called ResizDBF.zip.

Renaming / Moving an Image-File:

As mentioned above: after being stored in the Calydos-database you must not change the name or location of an image-file, because if you do then the file would not be found any more by the database.

So if you do need to rename or move an image-file you must perform it by means of Calydos.

Rename: invoke context-menu over the file and select 'rename'.
Move a file(s) to another directory:
This is done in two steps:
1. from the context-menu over source file: select 'Pick up'
2. from the context-menu over target directory: select 'Drop here'
Move a complete directory-structure to another disk-drive:
This is a special case, because you do have to use an external disk-maintenance-tool, such as Norton Commander or ZTreeBold, or alike.
Again, this is done in two steps:
1. With your preferred disk-maintenance-tool you move a complete directory structure to another disk drive
2. In the Calydos-Query-Mode: Select all images from the moved directory(ies), invoke from context-menu: change drive-letter.

Lock-Feature:

In order to help you prevent inadvertedly delete or move an image-file there is an optional 'Lock'-feature: If set active then every image-file is given the file-attributes 'hidden' and 'read-only' after being stored into the database. Calydos still can 'see' these files, so you can access them still easily through the database.

How to use:

For the first-time user the Calydos-GUI may not appear as intuitive as some may expect (or want). Though a certain approach to 'intuitivity' is made by implementing context-menus all over the GUI, please take the advice and...

Before you download the program, please read and accept the following NoWarranty-Clause:

Usage of this program is totally at your own risk. Not the author nor the dirstributor of this program may be held responsible for any damages that may arise out of the usage of this program.
This program is shareware. There is currently no registration implemented, i.e. the program can be used without any functional limitations or restrictions in the version that is currently provided.
This program is currently in beta-state. That means that it conatins bugs and errors and there is the possibility of data loss. If you do not want to bear this risk then you must not use this program.

Installation:	Download 'Calydos.zip' into a newly created directory, e.g. 'c:\Calydos' In that directory: enter 'unzip Calydos' enter install. Config.sys is not altered, so a re-boot is not required. Important: You should place the Calydos-program-directory on a disk-drive of adequate free disk space. Please take into account that (for the current version) program and database must reside in the same directory and that the database may grow to some size. This is due to the fact that for each processed image a thumbnail image is created and stored in the database-directory. Though configurable in size one image takes up about 100 kb (additional database-space is negligable). So you should expect about 1 GB disk space for every 10.000 images. Install over an existing version: Simply unzip the download-file 'Calydos.zip' into your existing directory. If your current version is of before May 12, 2005 then you must migrate your old images-database.

What you still need...	vrobj.zip (400 kb) Vrobj.dll is a DLL which is used by many programs and most probably you already have it somewhere on your system (in the LIBPATH). If not or if the version that you have is older than 06-06-1995 then you must download it here and unzip it into (recommended) x:\os2\dll\.
perhaps:	libc06r1.zip (468 kb) If you have image-files in RAW-data-format and want to display them in Calydos then you need the file libc06r1.dll from Innotek's GCC 3.3.5. Download libc06r1.zip and unzip libc06r1.dll into x:\os2\dll.
Note for users of digital camera:	In case you already have installed one or both of the programs PTPro or Camera (by Rich Walsh) you should delete from the Calydos program directory these files: usbresmg.sys usbcalls.dll ptpro.exe otherwise you might not be able to use the Camera-function in Calydos because of a possible version-conflict.

You can change the colors (background- and foreground-) of the main GUI-objects in the Calydos-window. Proceed as follows:

Open OS/2-Color-Palette
To set the background-color: Drag a color (with right mouse button) into the area of concern.
To set the foreground-color (text): hold <CTRL>-key pressed and proceed as above.
